France on Red Alert Amid Historic Heatwave and Growing Death Toll
A dangerous and deadly heatwave triggered by global warming is hitting Europe at its peak. There are 40 drowning cases reported by French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, since Thursday, as people try to find shelter from the heat without being safe; a few drowning incidents have been reported from Germany too. France has experienced its hottest June night and day so far, and half of France was put under a red alert. As a result of these extreme conditions, the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum will close early, a nuclear power plant was forced to shut down because of river heating, and transport officials alerted people about possible rail disturbances. While in Spain, temperatures have reached up to 44°C, Italy has declared a red alert for 15 cities as well as measures for emergency workers, while Belgian and Dutch meteorological agencies expect heatwave to hit its peak on Friday.
